Tax Rates & Refunds
When you have obtained your IRD number, you are classed as a resident for tax purposes for the duration of your working holiday visa. Make sure to fill out a new tax form for every job you work in NZ, declaring your tax (IRD) code. You will be able to receive this form from your employer.
You will now be taxed as a New Zealand citizen, meaning if you earn less than NZ $48,000 in one financial year, you will be taxed roughly 17.5% (without an IRD number, you could be paying up to 46.7% of your wage on taxes). The New Zealand financial year runs from 1st April to 31st March. At the end of the financial year, you may be eligible for a tax refund – which you can double check with the IRD. If you are eligible for a tax return, you need to download two relevant tax forms from the IRD website, fill out your tax details and lodge this around the 7th of July.
